hi babe! you certainly won`t win the price of "mr-makes-vienna-look-like-a-good-place-to-live". viennese people aren`t open like new yorkers are - i appreciated that aspect of new york live more than any attraction, you know that - so dont get that wrong. but: I think that what youre describing isn`t the other way of live between vienna and new york - its your attitude towards these cities. yes there are more attractions, people are more open, but tell me - have you found a new yorker you are really close with? dont forget that... and: people dancing in the street CAN be found in vienna - i know for sure, I am one of them ;) I am happy for you, its good to read you are so comfortable with your situation, all I want you to do is take some new york with you when coming back to me! kisses k.

Martin, that's a very nice picture! What you wrote about the differences between NY and Vienna I experienced the same way when I was in the US some years ago...

if you think, people in fast paced New York are friendly, you'll have to visit Chicago one day. The atmosphere over there is much more mellow and people are even friendlier. Germany and Austria? forget about it...

Welcome back to NYC! Yep, it's the small things that make or break it... I'm planning to go to one of my favourite city's in October/November, yep, I'm talking about NYC! And I guess, when I'll get out of the plane get really back in the city after 7 years, it will be the little things that makes me feel home again... Just for the record, I'm from Amsterdam, but had the chance to be in the city for 6 weeks during a summer. About your prejudice about artists, I've study on the Art Academy as well (graphic design), but hardly anybody believe it, they mostly think that I've studied law, economics, or so... So you see, people puts people too soon in a box, before they know them better. Hope for you it all ends well, because you've to gonna live with them :). Take care and this is a nice shot as well!

Is it still hot and humid in newyork? I want to capture a friendly vienna in my photos to show a different side. I know what you mean though, the other day i was on the tram and I said to the tram driver, bitte, and i showed him a paper that had the street that i was going to, he made a face like i was bothering him and pointed to a street sign across the street then opened the door.

Some certain small things that make me know: I'm back

People on 42nd Street in Manhattan
It's some certain small things that make me know that I am back in New York. It starts when getting on the bus in the morning, you look at the driver and say something like "Good morning, how are you doing today?". And you actually get an answer. It's this certain amount of friendliness in every day life situations which have been strange to me when I came to New York and which I appreciate now.
Seeing some of my fellow commuters again, recognizing some faces on the train, seeing people who are singing and dancing in public while listening to their MP3 player without getting stared at. Impossible in Vienna...
Getting back to work, meeting my colleagues again, hearing that they wanted me to bring Milka chocolate and "Mozartkugeln" from Vienna but didn't want to ask for it. I even heared that there was a guy calling the Magnum office telling them that he is a big fan of Magnum, that he loves my blog and therefore would really like to come over and see the office. First they told him that this is rather unusual but he sort of begged and then he was told that I am going to get in touch with him once I am back. I didn't yet get his contact information but am waiting for it.
It's this special sort of light, the last sunbeams coming down to the streets reflected by the windows of skyscrapers which is irresistible. The great diversity of people and cultures you happen to see wherever you look.
And of course it's also the noise on the streets, the hot and steamy air down in the subway stations and a couple of other things which are not as nice as the above described. Everything forms one whole thing. Oh and by the way... I met my new roommates. They are nice and they are artists. Artists... Well I am a little suspicious towards everything containing this term but we already talked about art a little bit tonight and I guess we are going to have some nice conversations on that topic. Might help me to get rid of some more prejudices.
