Simon Wheatley on the rooftop of the Magnum Photos New York office building

Simon Wheatley
British, b.1970
Photojournalist / Magnum Photos

Born in Singapore, living in London. Simon Wheatley began to take photography seriously while living in Budapest in the mid-1990s. In recent years he has focussed on marginalized urban areas, with a particular interest in the issues around regeneration and youth.
He has also spent considerable time in Amsterdam where he has photographed the 'liberal' era drawing to an end. He graduated from Manchester University in 1993 with a degree in American and Latin American Studies.

In 2005 he became a nominee member of the renown photo agency Magnum Photos.

The Audio Interview

"Maybe the most important thing I ever did was get away from England and that idea of having a career as a photojournalist. It's very competitive of course and I don't think that's a healthy environment in which to learn." - Simon Wheatley

I met Simon Wheatley in the New York Magnum office for the first time when he was visiting for three weeks. We originally wanted to do the interview a month earlier but decided to wait until we could meet in person.
This interview is divided into 11 chapters and every chapter can be downloaded as MP3 file. Listen to them at home or put them on your MP3 player and listen to them on your way to work, while you wander around the streets on the lookout for subjects to photograph or wherever you want. Any comments, feedback and improvement suggestions for the next interviews are highly appreciated.
This interview was recorded on September 27th in the New York City Magnum office. The total length of the interview is 46:45 minutes.
