Canon EOS 20D
The Canon EOS-20D is the best reasonably priced digital SLR that you can get at the moment in my opinion. It's photo quality is excellent, color and exposure are accurate and one of the things I like most about the 20D is that noise levels are very low, even at ISO 1600! The Canon EOS 20D is a realy great camera for low-light images.
The camera performance is first rate, from an instant startup to nearly zero shutter lag or shot-to-shot delay. The AF with it's 9 points works damn fast and very accurate as well. I also use the BG-E2 battery grip which offers a comfortable grip in both portrait and landscape orientation which is especially usefull for people with rather big hands as mine are. It does also provide additional battery capacity as it can take two BP-511A batteries.
The 20D's ergonomics are very good. New on the 20D is the multi-controller, a small 8-way joy stick that's used to select the AF point, set White Balance correction, move the trimming frame for direct printing, and scroll a magnified image in playback mode. The only thing I am missing on the 20D is that you have to press a button to see the current ISO setting and and in no instance is it visible in the viewfinder.
The 17-40mm has a very good focal length range for shooting with the EOS 20D. It is equivalent to a 27.2-64mm lens on a classical film-based SLR which is the focal length I am and was using most of the time even when shooting with the 24-70mm lens on my old EOS 1.
It is built extremely tough and the body finish of this lens appears rather durable and strong.
The AF speed is very well even in low light situations and colors and contrasts are good. Sometimes I wish it was a F/2.8 for indoor and low light situations but the option for that lies with the 16-35mm at quite a bit more money.
The build quality of the 24-70mm lens is similar to the 17-40mm lens used. The focal length is equivalent to a 38.4-112mm lens on a classical film-based SLR. If you do not need the focal length between 25.6 and 38.4mm and like to have the extra length in the telephoto area this lens is the one to go for. I am using this lens together with the 17-40mm when shooting different kinds of events where a longer focal length might be useful.
The 24-70mm lens provides great image quality suitable to professional standards and it's f/2.8 makes it usable indoors with available light.
